The platform “Austrian Initiative Mother’s Night” is committed to reducing maternal mortality in developing countries.

289,000 women and girls die every year from complications during pregnancy and childbirth – 99 percent of them in countries of the Global South. Most cases of death are preventable through improved health care, girls‘ education and access to contraceptives.

“Mother’s Night” is celebrated every year on the eve of Mother’s Day. On this day we highlight this issue, maternal mortality, throughout Austria.

Austria as member country of the United Nations is obliged to contribute to the reduction of maternal mortality. The objective 3 of Agenda 2030 is the worldwide reduction of maternal mortality to 70 per 100,000 live births by 2030. Austria has to participate with political and financial means to achieve this objective. By means of public actions the platform “Mother’s Night” tries to make the Austrian Government to carry out their international obligations.
